I have always wanted to go whale watching. This trip to Vancouver Island I booked with Prince of Whales Tours and I was not disappointed. While you are never guaranteed whale sightings, they do their best. We were fortunate to come upon a transient pod of Orcas with a baby in tow. What majestic creatures! What a thrill!
Orcas, or killer whales, are not actually whales. (Thank-you, Kathy, for correcting me on that!) They are the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family. Unfortunately these creatures are threatened by the environment they live in, from oil spills and airborne pollutants to fishing nets and a decline in prey. For more information on how you can help, check out the David Suzuki Foundation or Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
I also paid a visit to the famed Butchart Gardens in Victoria. From green shady areas to spectacular rose gardens, this is a haven for photographers and plant lovers alike! A person cannot escape the sense of wellbeing in such a place. I would recommend packing a picnic and blanket and spending the day. There is a fireworks display on Saturday evenings during the summer, included in the daily admission. Prices vary, depending on the time of year.
